On Saturday the 30th April we had our first game against the Kats and we won both grades. Our reserves side had a number of players from last year’s league squad in it and they played accordingly. The boys moved the ball well and never let the Kats have a chance. With Brenno up forward kicking himself a bag and Dave Drummo in the ruck and backline rebounding the ball into the forward half the boys were always going to play well.

New players to the reserves side had a great game with Jordan Perkuvitch providing great run along the wing. The boys ran away comfortable winners but it was still a tough and taxing game.

Jamie Lee was important for the reserves side through the middle and with a bit more fitness could find himself back into the league side pretty soon. One of our under 18s Dylan Foster-Reid came into the side for his first senior game and played well across half forward, definitely a player to watch in the future.

The final score
FALCONS   12.14 (86)
KATS           4.8 (32)
Best on grounds = Drummo, Brenno, Jamie Lee, Jordan.

The league game was tough from the start with the Kats definitely improved from last year. They came out hard with plenty of run and good structures around the ground. However our boys are well drilled and even though there was lots of new names in the side we were able to overcome any challenge they through to win comfortably.

The first quarter started with the Kats kicking the first goal but that was it as our boys kicked the next 4. The Kats kicked back late but we had all the run leading into the first break. In the second quarter we kicked the first 2 but that was it as the Kats launched an onslaught having our backline under siege for a good 15 minutes. However the boys held strong and the Kats couldn’t convert kicking 1 goal 6.

After half time we turned it on kicking away and punishing the Kats for not converting. The game was getting intense with neither side looking to give an inch which resulted in almost 8 bounce down in a row because no side could get the ball out. Some bold moves from fill in coaches Mick and Maca saw Sully moved onto the ball and Mick down into a pocket to rove around big Thirdy in the square. This gave the boys a spark with Mick kicking 4.4 and Sully providing some run through the middle. Mangos and new player Dan were superb around the ground with heaps of hard ball gets and great fight. Dan kicked 3 important goals in the 2nd half. The last quarter was a matter of holding them off and we managed to do that and then run over them late in the term kicking away to a comfortable lead.

FALCONS   15.9 (99)
KATS            8.9 (57)
BOG’s = Mick F, Sully, Dan, Mangos.

Saturday the 16th was the 2nd pre-season carnival and our boys ran away winners
pretty convincingly. We were put into group A with Kats and Swans and played the Kats
in our first game.

With a squad of 45 players to rotate through the game there was always going to be
fresh legs on the ground.

The boys exploded out of the blocks against the Kats in the first game kicking 5 goals
to none in about 10 minutes. The Kats started to work into it late in the game thanks
to some undisciplined work from Cameron (sauce head) Ling.

The second half was similar with the boys kicking away early and the Kats working hard
to get back into. Towny swung the changed all game rotating everyone on the ground
through out. Some of the best players were Mangos, Wailu, Mudge, Simsy and Gavin
Jacks. We ran out comfortable winners.
The second game was against a tiring swans outfit and they were never in it, the boys
came out hard and once they kicked the first the flood gates open and we piled them
on. The boys structures were set up well across half forward and the centre with a
zoned wall that the swans just couldn’t get through. With everyone coming on
throughout the game the run never stopped. The boys won thanks to some good play
from Rhett, Micky, Dan, Wailu, Simsy, Rhys and Bruce.
After winning the first two games we made it through to play Port Hedland in the final
and after putting in the effort to get up and not wanting to let the Rovers have a win
against us early in the year the boys put in a big effort. The rovers had to play two
games in a row and were worn out from the start as the boys managed to work through
the game getting some extra run in the legs. As always it was a tough game against
them but we held through to beat them by 5 goals.
It was a good day for an exciting squad with lots of new recruits proving there going to
be challenging last years side for spots. Towny was pleased with how new players Simsy
(player of the carnival) played with some excellent pack marking, Toodles from down
south played well across the backline giving us some much needed height, young Dan
through the midfield and across half forward who attacked it hard, new recruit Ben
“the full forward” Brady who lead well and kicked 2 goals, to everyones surprise. Eric
“mudge” was also strong through out the day doing some exciting stuff in the forward
line.

Throughout the evening Dale Jones was selling the tickets for the 100 club which many of you took the opportunity to ensure you don’t miss out.  The door prize for the evening was a ticket in the 100 club which was won by Daniel Berthelsen.  Good Luck Daniel.

Thanks go to Terry Milligan for his donation of the framed photograph of our two Premiership Sides from the 2010 season.  Much fun was created by our Auctioneer, Young Sully, I think he has missed his vocation. Great job Sull!
